Rooms & Suites
Sixty-one of them, on five floors
01 — How they are laid out

Five categories, five floors, one lift

There are 61 rooms at The Mooring Place. Thirty-seven of them look west over the moorings to Haulashore Island; the rest look inland over the courtyard and the hill, and are quieter for it.

The building is a 1928 bond store, so the rooms are not identical the way they are in a purpose-built hotel. Ceilings run from 2.7 m on the ground floor to 3.4 m under the trusses. Some rooms have a post in them. We have listed the size of every category below because floor area is the thing people actually want to know, and it is the thing hotel websites usually leave out.

Every room: king or queen bed with wool underlay, a kettle, a plunger and Nelson milk, blackout blinds, fibre wifi with no login page, and a window that opens. Four rooms are step-free from the lift with roll-in showers — ask for the Frankton-side pair on level two.

02 — The rooms

What each one is

Quay Room

Quay Room

24 m² · Queen · sleeps 2 · 18 in the house

The smallest rooms we have, on the second and third floors at the back of the building, looking over the courtyard and the roofline of the quay. Quiet — the harbour side takes the weather and the noise, and this side does not.

  • Queen bed
  • Rain shower, no bath
  • Desk and reading chair
  • Tea, plunger coffee, Nelson milk
  • Blackout blinds
NZ$219 per night, from Enquire
Harbour Room

Harbour Room

28 m² · King or twin · sleeps 2 · 21 in the house

West-facing, one window each, straight out over the moorings to Haulashore Island. These are the rooms people ask for again the second time they stay. The window opens — properly, on a stay, not a 100 mm restrictor.

  • King bed, or twin on request
  • Bath and shower
  • Harbour view
  • Armchair by the window
  • Tea, plunger coffee, Nelson milk
NZ$268 per night, from Enquire
Bank Room

Bank Room

33 m² · King · sleeps 3 · 14 in the house

Corner rooms, named for the Boulder Bank you can see running out to the lighthouse on a clear afternoon. Two aspects, so they hold light most of the day. A sofa bed takes a third guest without crowding the room.

  • King bed and a sofa bed
  • Corner windows, two aspects
  • Bath and separate shower
  • Writing desk
  • Robes and slippers
NZ$324 per night, from Enquire
Tasman Suite

Tasman Suite

46 m² · King · sleeps 4 · 6 in the house

A separate sitting room with a door that shuts, which matters if one of you is working and the other is not. Third floor, harbour side, with the original 1928 window frames restored rather than replaced.

  • Separate sitting room
  • King bed, sofa bed for two
  • Bath with a harbour view
  • Dining table for four
  • Nespresso and a kettle
NZ$438 per night, from Enquire
The Mooring Suite

The Mooring Suite

68 m² · King · sleeps 4 · 2 in the house

Two of them, both on the top floor, both west-facing. In summer the sun goes down behind the Arthur Range at the end of the bay and the whole room turns the colour of the brick. There is a reason we only have two.

  • 68 m² across three rooms
  • Private terrace, 14 m²
  • Freestanding bath
  • Kitchenette
  • Late checkout at 2pm included
NZ$695 per night, from Enquire
